Kerman is one of the largest cities in southeastern Iran situated on a sandy plain 1749 meters above sea level and is the capital of Kerman province. It includes the southern part of the central Iranian desert, Dashte-e Lut, which is one of the world’s largest desert and included on UNESCO’s World Heritage List. The city is surrounded by mountains.
Kerman is famous for its long history and strong cultural heritage. It is home to many historic mosques and Zoroastrian fire temples. The city has a small but culturally significant Zoroastrian minority.
During its history, kerman became the capital city of Iranian dynasties several times. When Marco Polo visited Kerman in 1271, it was a major trade center linking the Persian Gulf with Khorasan and Central Asia.
Kerman is well known for its high quality rug and pistachios and it is the largest producer and exporter of carpet in Iran.
